gilt-decorated frame embellished with ten bats cast in high relief

on the sides and at each corner, further enclosed by a wood frame

garnished with gilt floral ornaments, below a gilt hanging bracket, the

backed with paper decorated with dragons.

Each 132.5cm (52 1/4in) long. (2).

HKD1,200,000 - 1,500,000

US$150,000 - 190,000

The couplet reads:

Which may be translated as: '(The jade) simply has its intrinsic

beauty and is like a national treasure. It looks pure and natural even

without any polish.'

The poetic verse comes from the poem 'Song Liu Yifu Zhi Fang Dong

Gui Er Shou Qi Yi', by the Song dynasty poet Lv Tao, with minor

alterations.

Rarely do we encounter paired cloisonné enamel panels in such

impeccable condition. This extraordinary example captivates with its

vibrant enamel hues and opulent gilded adornments. It seamlessly

merges the artistry of poetry, calligraphy, and the meticulous

craftsmanship of cloisonné enamel during the Qianlong period.

The art and craftsmanship of cloisonné enamel were prosperously

developed during the celebrated reign of the Qianlong Emperor. The

technical virtuosity achieved by the Imperial ateliers facilitated the

production of large-scale and intricate cloisonné wares, including tall

decorative panels like the present lot. Compare three related pairs of

cloisonné enamel couplet panels, also inserted with gilt-metal poetry

lines, Qianlong, in the Shenyang Imperial Palace Museum, from the

Qing court collection: one decorated with floral sprays against the

navy-blue ground and applied with a five-characters couplet from the

imperial poems in clerical script by Cao Wenzhi; the other two were in

rectangular form with convex surface, both carried seven-characters

couplet in seal script by Xie Yong, one decorated with wan pattern on

navy-blue ground while another decorated with similar turquoise-blue

ground and floral scrolls as the present lot, all illustrated in The Prime

Cultural Relics Collected by Shenyang Imperial Palace Museum: The

Enamel Volume, Shenyang, 2007, pp.240-242, pls.17-19.

See also a related pair of Imperial gilt-bronze and cloisonné enamel

huanghuali-framed poetic panels, Huang Liuzi Si Yin seal mark,

attributed to Yong Rong (1743-1790), Qianlong, which was sold at

Bonhams Hong Kong, 27 November 2014, lot 123. This example

shows a different technique of imitating the brushstrokes by the use

of black enamel, instead of applying separate gilt-metal characters.

44 | Bonhams The present pair of cabinets made with richly figured huanghuali wood

is a very fine surviving example of a special type of cabinet in

classical Chinese furniture. Elegantly designed in a clean upright

rectangular form and embellished with a series of exquisitely

decorated panels and aprons, these cabinets exhibit the remarkable

craftsmanship and distinct aesthetic achievement during the 17th

century. Furniture at that time was not only designed to be practical,

but also accommodated the artistic perception and leisurely

lifestyle pursued by the literati. This pair of cabinets is notable for

the harmonious balance of succinct form and tasteful decoration,

manifesting a sense of modest elegance echo the aesthetic of the

owner.

Among the Ming style furniture, cabinet with an open shelf on top

of a storing chest is commonly known as lianggegui. It was an

important component, especially for the connoisseur, in the scholar's

studio as the top compartment was functioned as a display shelf to

showcase one's precious antiques collection. Cabinet of this type

was mentioned in Zhang Wu Zhi (Treatise on Superfluous Things)

by Wen Zhenheng, a Ming dynasty scholar who also hailed as the

gentleman with refined cultural taste, that it was suitable to display

archaic bronzes, jades and curios. It is suggested that the lower part

was used to store the connoisseur's collection as objects on display

were often in rotation according to the season or one's mood, see

Craig Clunas, Chinese Furniture, London, 1997, p.87.

For related examples of display cabinets dated to the Ming dynasty,

see two with single top compartment supported on stylish stand

and one with double top compartments above three drawers,

Appreciation of Ming Furniture), Hong Kong, 2012, pp.206-209,

S.Handler, Austere Luminosity of Chinese Classical Furniture, Berkley,

Los Angeles, London, 2001, p.58, fig.4.20. The author notes that the

chair's back is notably narrower than its seat, allowing for S-shaped

arms that gracefully curve around the seat's corners. Covered by

a large mat panel, the back is distinguished from the dynamically

curved yoke by inset panels adorned with cut-out, beaded-edged

cartouches, with shaped spandrels positioned beneath the yoke.

A very similar and possibly identical pair (each 112.2cm high x

46.4cm deep x 60cm wide) from the Dr. S.Y. Yip Collection, was

illustrated by Wang Shixiang in 'Additional Examples of Classical

Chinese Furniture,' Chinese Furniture: Selected Articles from

Orientations 1984-1994, Hong Kong, 1996, p.97. According to

Wang, the pair of armchairs discussed was attributed to the late 16th

to early 17th century, and such unique design happened to be only

with textual and pictorial sources before. Given the unusual style and

exquisite carpentry craftsmanship, the present lot is probably the

most remarkable example of its form housed in a private collection.

Sarah

Handler著,《Austere Luminosity of Chinese Classical Furniture》

王世襄著,〈Additional Examples of Classical Chinese Furniture〉

Chinese Furniture: Selected Articles from Orientations
