(Extended Activity),

3. Read the passage and answer the questions.

A Brief History of Beijing

Beijing has a history of more than 3,000 years.

As the northern gateway of the central plain, the Beijing area was increasingly

valued by the Xia, Shang and Zhou dynasties. In the Shang dynasty, the State of Ji was

formed in the area north of Beijing today. In the mid-11th century BC, after overthrowing

the Shang dynasty, King Wu of the Zhou vassalized the state of Ji. Its capital, the city of

Ji, was located in the Guang’anmen area in southwestern Beijing. In the 7th century BC,

the state of Yan annexed the state of Ji and established its capital in the City of Ji. During

the Warring States period, the city was famous for its prosperity.

In the Qin and Han dynasties, the Beijing area was the northern transportation

hub and military center in the central plain. From the Wei and the Jin to the Northern

dynasties, the area was relatively stable despite frequent regime changes. Then during

the Sui dynasty, the Tang dynasty and the Five dynasties, as the center of Youzhou, the

Beijing area developed steadily. During the Liao dynasty, Youzhou was promoted to the

southern political center and named Nanjing. It was also called Yanjing at that time.

In the Jin dynasty, King Hailing moved the capital from Shangjing to Yanjing and

named it Zhongdu. The center of Zhongdu was located in the area of Nanbinhe Road in

today’s Guang’anmen in Beijing.

In the Yuan dynasty, the capital was established at Dadu, the urban area of

present-day Beijing within the Second Ring Road, more specifically from the Yuan

Capital City Wall Site Park to Chang’an Avenue.

In 1368, the Ming dynasty changed the name of Dadu to Beiping, meaning peace

in the north. During the reign of Chengzu, the Ming dynasty renamed Beiping to Beijing

in 1403, then moved its capital to Beijing in 1421. In the Qing dynasty, Beijing was the

political center and the multinational cultural integration center.

In 1912, Beijing became the capital of the Republic of China. After the Nanjing

National Government was established, Beijing was named Beiping again in 1928.

After the peaceful liberation in January 1949, Beiping became the capital of China’s

liberated areas. On September 27, 1949, the first plenary session of the Chinese

People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) unanimously passed a resolution:

“The capital of the People’s Republic of China is set in Beiping, and Beiping will be renamed

Beijing from now on.”

Question

1) In which dynasty was Beijing named Zhongdu? In which dynasty was it named

Dadu?

2) Review the history of Beijing and draw up a timeline using the contents provided

from this passage.

George: I’ve been curious about the names Xidan and Xisi for some time. Is the name

Xisi also traced back to the old archway?

Lili: I once had the same question, so I did some research in it. First of all, “dan” and

“si” are numbers in Chinese. “Dan” is one, single, and “si ” is four. Secondly, archway in

Chinese is “pailou”. In the old city of Beijing, 5) ________________________________

danpailou”, literally is “west single archway.” If there were four archways built there,

it would be named “sipailou”. “Xi sipailou”, for example, would mean “the west four

archways”. So that’s how we get Xidan and Xisi.

George: Do you know when the old archway was set up?

Peking Man Site at Zhoukoudian

Beijing is one of the birthplaces of mankind. Peking Man appeared 500,000 years

ago at the Longgu Mountain in Zhoukoudian village, Fangshan District, about 42

kilometers southwest of Beijing. Peking Man was a primitive human in the middle of the

evolutionary chain from ancient apes to modern humans. Peking Man was a descendant of

Australopithecus, and the ancestor of Homo sapiens. At the Peking Man Site, scholars

have found over 20 dig sites. Among them, there are Peking Man Cave, Upper Cave

and New Cave. The excavations discovered up to now include human and other animal

fossils, stone tools, and evidences of using fire. The discoveries prove that the Peking

Man lived a life mainly based on gathering, supplemented by hunting. Peking Man is a

historical proof of human society and a clue to reconstruct early human history. Through

the study of the surrounding natural environment, scientists have found out that despite

the long history, the geology and the landforms of Beijing 500,000 years ago were similar

to those of today.

1) Where is the Peking Man Site?

2) On the evolutionary chain of human beings, where does Peking Man stand?

3) What do the excavations include? And what do they prove?

4) What have the scientists found out about the natural environment of Beijing 500,000

residences of historical celebrities? What do you know about that residence?

2. Read the passage and answer the questions.

History of Hutongs in Beijing

By the Warring States period, rulers had begun to pay much attention to the

design of the city. In the 12th century AD, Zhongdu, as the capital of the Jin dynasty, was

carefully constructed. There were districts, streets, roads and alleys in the city, but there

were no hutongs. Hutongs were firstly built in Dadu during the Yuan dynasty, more than

700 years ago. The word “hutong” was transliterated from Mongolian, meaning “a well”,

or “where there is a well”.

In the Yuan dynasty, it was stipulated that an alley with a width of 9.24 meters

should be called a “hutong”, and an alley which was 18 meters in width should be named

a “xiaojie” (small street), or a “dajie” (main street) if 36 meters in width. There were

altogether 413 alleys in Dadu at that time, 29 of which were hutongs. During the Ming

dynasty, there were 1,170 streets and alleys in the city of Beijing, 459 hutongs included.

After the takeover by the Manchus, the city of Beijing constructed by the Ming dynasty

was preserved by the Qing dynasty. Due to the implementation of the policy that all Han

people living in the inner city should move to the outer city, the deserted outer city

developed quickly. However, the distinctions between streets and hutongs blurred

(although the pattern of streets and alleys were generally based on those of the Yuan

dynasty and the Ming dynasty). The number of streets and hutongs in Beijing reached

about 2,077 in the Qing dynasty, 978 of which were called “hutong”.

Today, there are over 1,000 hutongs in Beijing. In order to protect and maintain

the traditional characteristics of the city, more than 20 hutongs have been designated as

historically and culturally protected areas. Some of the ancient buildings in them are

cultural relics designated and protected by the municipal government, while others are

even designated as culturally significant to the nation.

Question

1) In which dynasty were hutongs first built?

2) How many hutongs were there in Beijing in the Ming dynasty?

3) Why did the outer city of Beijing develop quickly in the Qing dynasty?

4) How do you think hutongs should be protected in Beijing now?

The Great Wall

The Great Wall, built by our ancient ancestors as a military defence project, is one

of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. The Simatai Great Wall in Gubeikou, northeast of Miyun District, is the best preserved. The Simatai Great Wall was constructed in

the early years of Hongwu in the Ming dynasty on the basis of the original Northern Qi

Great Wall, but deviated from the original planned route. It is 5.7 kilometers long and has

35 watch-towers. Its two well-known parts, the “Ladder” and the “Flyover”, were built

at the top of cliffs. The “Ladder” slopes 85° . The “Flyover” refers to the slates about 100

meters long and one brick wide between the 15th and the 16th watch-towers.

The designer of the Simatai Great Wall is Qi Jiguang. When General Qi went to

Gubeikou to survey the land, he found the town was of strategic importance since it is

the key route from the North China Plain to Inner Mongolia and the Northeast Plain. He

ordered to build the Great Wall along the ridge of Wohu Mountain and Panlong Mountain

and use the crossing between the two mountains as the gateway.

Question

Ask each other the questions below. In addition to what you’ve learned here, feel free

to call on your experiences or refer to other resources.

1) Have you ever visited the Great Wall? If yes, what did you see there, and what did

you think about the experience? Are there any differences between your expectations

and what you actually saw?

2) If you haven’t visited the Great Wall, what do you think you can see there?
