Why do we need to try hard? Here are some answers.

It helps us do well

We often look at people who are successful and wish we could be like

them. Perhaps we think these people do well because they are clever or

rich or even just lucky. Having money, luck or talent is almost never the

main or only reason that people do well. To do well at something, the answer is to try hard. For a test, we have to prepare and study, while in

sports and activities we need to train regularly.

It teaches us how to solve problems

Trying hard means putting effort in even if we don’t get things right

the first time. This means not giving up after our first, second or even third

attempt. But remember, we learn from our failures. We learn what didn’t

work. This means we can try doing it another way and maybe that will

work. But unless we try hard, we’ll never know.

It helps us to try new things

Sometimes we can be a bit scared of trying new things. This can hold

us back from giving new things a chance.

Imagine that our parents sign us up for

an after-school activity, and we really

don’t want to do it. Maybe we don’t know

anyone there or it’s not something we’ve

ever tried before. If we make up our minds

to try hard at the new activity, we could

discover that it’s something ▲ .

Isadora Duncan was an American pioneer

of dance. She loved to dance, but she didn’t like

traditional dances. Isadora listened to the music

and moved naturally. She walked, jumped, or just

stood still and moved. No one had ever danced

like that before. She was the creator of modern

dance.

Isadora was born in 1878 in California, the

youngest of four. Her father was a poet and her

mother was a music teacher. But her parents’

marriage ended when she was three. Their mother,

Mary Duncan looked after the four children. The family was very poor. Isadora taught dance lessons to other children to make money when she was

only five.

Mary taught her children about music, dancing and the theater. Young

Isadora believed this was all she needed. She didn’t attend school for very

long. She said it stopped her from dancing and thinking about the arts.

She thought dancing should be an art, not just for entertainment(n. 娱乐).

In 1900, she danced at London’s Lyceum Theater. People there liked her

dance and began to think of her as a great dancer. Unfortunately(adv. 不幸

地), her life ended suddenly in 1927.

Isadora is called “the mother of modern dance”. She gave birth to a

freer kind of dance, dancing barefoot(adj. 赤脚的), and she was the most

famous dancer of her time.

Tropical(adj. 热带的) rainforests are mainly located near the tropics.

They are found in Central and South America, Western and Central Africa,

Western India, Southeast Asia and the north-eastern tip of Australia.

Scientists believe that tropical rainforests are the oldest and most

complex ecosystems(n. 生态系统) on the earth. Forests in North America

or Europe, for example, may have just 5 to 10 kinds of trees while the

same area of land in the tropical rainforests can have 300 kinds. Besides

many kinds of trees, tropical rainforests are home to special animals and

thousands of other animals and different plants. Biologists haven’t even

discovered all the kinds in the tropical rainforests.

Rainforests are important to the earth because they help ▲ . They

store over half of the earth’s rainwater. Water that goes off from trees

falls in other areas as rain. Tropical rainforests are green and warm all

year long! Temperatures don’t even change much between night and day.

The average temperature in tropical rainforests is usually from 21 to 30°C.

The environment is pretty wet in tropical rainforests.

Rainforests also help to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2

). Destruction (n. 破

坏) of rainforests leads to global warming.

Rainforests are disappearing quickly, largely because of human

development over the past few centuries. Now many organizations and

groups are trying to protect rainforests. The Rainforest Trust, for example,

created a large reserve(n. 自然保护区) on Sangihe Island to protect the

bird species in Asia.

be seen by anyone walking or driving by, making it a form of public art. Besides,

it is a popular form of art around the world, which can be found in lots of cities.

didn’t do any housework and neither did I. Finally I couldn’t find a clean shirt. The
