Just over a month ago, no one would have imagined that

Zibo, a relatively not well-known city situated in central

Shandong province in eastern China, would emerge as one of the

most sought-after travel destinations for the upcoming Labor Day

holiday. And yet, this previously overlooked city has experienced

a surprising 2,000% rise in tourism bookings during the holiday season when compared with

the same period last year.

What could be behind this huge increase in visitors? Well, the answer is ... barbecue!

Let’s take a look at the barbecue scene in Zibo. Check out the bustling stalls, the long

lines snaking hundreds of meters, and people bringing their own stools to sit on. Diners are

so eager to eat that they can do nothing but wait.

You might think that there must be something special about Zibo barbecue, right?

Indeed, Zibo barbecue preserves the essence of Shandong cuisine, the top of the eight great

Chinese culinary traditions. But as we all know, Chinese cuisine is rich and diverse, and

there are many famous local variations of barbecue. The reason for Zibo’s popularity is

actually another story.

After Zibo barbecue started trending online, the local government quickly added special “barbecue trains” on weekends, added 21 customized barbecue bus lines, and released an

official barbecue food map. Strict supervision has also been implemented to prevent such

behavior as raising prices and short-weighting. Furthermore, Zibo has gone the extra mile by

offering complimentary sightseeing tours of the city to college students as a means of

attracting top talent and drawing their attention to the city.

As such, it was the collective efforts and swift response by the government and the

public that ultimately fueled Zibo’s popularity following its unexpected “viral rise.”

Lewis Swire is only 13 years old, but he is doing something that will surprise many people. He founded Curious Times, a free online newspaper written by young people for young

people. “It’s written by the right audience for the right audience,” Swire tells The Week

Junior. “One young person to another, so the understanding is direct.”

... Anyone can hand in an article about anything they like through the site. Swire says that

almost all the articles have been “of really high quality”, and the writing style shows the

place where the person comes from. The only article the team have received but haven’t

published is one that didn’t seem to have been written by a young person. The title Curious

Times is influenced by traditional newspaper names, and what Swire thinks is a strong

characteristic of young people: curiosity. “Young people are very curious, wanting to learn

more,” he says. “That curiosity never has to leave you, as long as you keep your pen.” What can be the best title for the text?

A. Never Give Up Easily B. Practice Makes Perfect

C. A Young Boy Surprises Us D. Well Begun Is Half Done

Cooking with steam is of great importance in Chinese cuisine. It’s one of the best ways to

lock the original flavors in the ingredients. Vegetables are healthy and full of fiber, and steaming is a quick way to cook them without

using much oil. Chinese cabbage is a perfect vegetable to steam: crunchy, tender, less fibrous

and mildly sweet. The tender cabbage can be steamed directly with a simple sauce consisting

of garlic paste, soy sauce and sugar. Root vegetables like sweet potatoes are also great for

steaming. They can be cut into thick sticks or slices and then steamed until the center

becomes soft. Thin pieces of carrots, fresh sophora flowers can be coated with dry flour and

then steamed. This quick dish is usually served with a garlic paste and vinegar sauce. What is the best title for the text?

A. Cooking Meals with Steam B. Cooking Seafood in a New Way

C. Advantages of Cooking with Steam D. Tips for Cooking Some Delicious Dishes

actions can make a positive difference. One mom experienced this first-hand. This mom was obviously pregnant and traveling alone with her young son at the Los

Angeles International Airport. Then things took a turn for the worse. The boy, about 18 months old, according to Beth, a Facebook user, was running all over

the place, kicking, screaming, and lying on the floor, unwilling to get aboard the plane. His

mom could do nothing but calm him down, but Beth said, “She couldn’t pick him up because

he was so upset. He kept running away from her, then lying down on the ground, kicking and

screaming again.” Finally, the mom was at her wits’ end. She sat down on the floor next to

her son, buried her face in her hands, and began to cry. Then the most amazing thing happened. A group of six or seven women, Beth included, circled around the mother and son and

did something to help. Beth sang him the “Itsy Bitsy Spider”. Another offered an orange. Another gave him a toy she had on hand. Another helped get his cup out of Mom’s bag. Yet

another tended to Mom by offering her a water bottle. With the help of these women, the kid

and his mother calmed down and were able to board the plane. And then life moved on. All of the strangers went their separate ways without speaking

of what had happened. But Beth said it was something she’d never forget. “We were

strangers, gathering to solve something,” she wrote. “It occurred to me that a circle of

Weaving down a steep slope, snowboarder Zhang Xu skied gracefully to a stop in a

shower of white powder — one of a new generation of Chinese people learning winter sports

in new indoor facilities. “I fell in love with the sport,” said 25-year-old Zhang, who started

coming to the Sunac Snow Centre in Chengdu in July, the same month it opened. “Skiing

used to be a relatively small sport in China but now it’s more popular, and the credit for that

is down to the Winter Olympics.” The 2022 Beijing Winter Games have caused a rapid increase in construction of snow

resorts(胜地). It’s surprising that their numbers should rocket nearly fourfold, fueled by

demand from China’s middle class. Nearly 21 million people visited one last year, as the

ability to spend more on leisure activities grows — average national income has increased

four times over the last two decades. In provinces such as southwestern Sichuan, known for its hot and humid summers, there

are plenty of mountains but little snow, so the best way for locals to learn to ski is inside. “We are the first indoor ski resort in southwest China,” said Liu Jia, manager of the Sunac

Snow Centre. At 80,800 square meters, the snow park is the largest of its kind in the world — though one in Shanghai, scheduled to open in the next 18 months, could make that seem

unimportant by comparison. China has grand plans for this growing interest — it has previously said it wants to put

10 percent of the world’s largest number of people on skis ahead of the 2022 Games. That’s a

figure so large that it would double the current global record of skiers. 1. Why was Zhang Xu mentioned in the first paragraph?

The loss of honey bee colonies (蜂群) is worrying experts across the United States. But

a man in California thinks he has found an unusual way to save them. Michael Thiele does

something that he calls the “rewilding” of honeybees. He makes bees live in natural hives

(蜂箱) high above the ground, as they did for millions of years. Thiele, who is from Germany, has been making the special hives since 2008. He says, “People can do this very, very simple thing — including making wooden hives and attaching

them to trees.” He also sometimes hangs the hives from the tops of buildings or puts them on

high wooden tables for a similar effect. The hives then become attractive to bees looking for

a nest, and they may well move in their new “home” within a few weeks. Honey bees are important because they help plants produce about a quarter of the food

that Americans eat. Experts say the bee population is getting smaller because of climate

change and other human-caused behaviors. We are building houses and cities on land where

they live, and using chemicals that are killing them. Last winter, U.S. beekeepers lost almost

40%. That result comes from a report this year by the Bee Informed Partnership, a group of

people in the bee industry. Thiele says the usual ways people raise honey bees are bad for their health. He refused

to accept the white boxes that traditional beekeepers use. He also refuses to use chemicals, smoke or protective clothes when he works with bees. He touches them with his hands. Thiele says his hives are both a way to save bees and a personal project. “When bees

stayed on his hand and arm,” he said, “it feels so exciting and I feel how important it is to

protect them.” 1. In what way did Thiele help save honey bee colonies?

A. By placing bee hives close to the ground. B. By changing the former location of the bee hives. C. By keeping bees in high buildings and wooden tables. D. By making bees live in natural hives high off the ground. 2. What causes the drop of bee population?

To make artificial intelligence that can reason and apply knowledge flexibly, many

that can figure out simple abstract relations between objects and the reason behind them as

effortlessly as a human brain. Artificial intelligence has come a long way. In recent years, smart machines inspired by

the human brain have shown superhuman abilities in games like chess and Go. But with

various other aspects of what we might reasonably call human intelligence — reasoning, understanding causality (因果关系), applying knowledge flexibly, to name a few — AIs still

struggle. They are also inefficient learners, requiring large amounts of data where humans

need only a few examples. Some researchers think all we need to bridge the gap is ever larger AIs, while others want

to turn back to nature’s blueprint. One path is to double down on efforts to copy the brain, better replicating ( 复 制) the intricacies of real brain cells and the ways their activity is

arranged. But the brain is the most complex object in the known universe and it is far from

clear how much of its complexity we need to replicate to reproduce its capabilities. That’s why some believe more abstract ideas about how intelligence works can provide

shortcuts. Their claim is that to really accelerate the progress of AI towards something that

we can say thinks like a human, we need to imitate not the brain — but the mind. “In some

sense, they’re just different ways of looking at the same thing,” says Gary Marcus at New

Recently, a rhythmic tongue twister “Growing Flowers

in the Garden” suddenly became popular on the Internet. A

kindergarten teacher in Wuhan, with his sweet and healing

face and a teaching video of the children’s song “Little

Garden”, is said to have gained more than 200 million fans

in three days. In fact, this song “Planting Flowers in the Garden” became popular a few years ago, but it did not reach the “phenomenal level”, nor was it widely publicized

and hyped like this time. (1) This song “Planting Flowers in the Garden” , composed by an online musician

named Teacher Xiao Cong, uses simple language and rhyming words to describe a scene of planting flowers, which is both interesting and educational. It also uses different sizes of gardens and seeds to express

different degrees of exaggeration and contrast, adding a sense of humor and imagination. (2) It also uses

repeated “digging, digging, digging” to create a strong sense of rhythm and the effect of tongue twisters, making people unable to resist singing along. Teacher Xiao Cong released this nursery rhyme on April 29, 2023, and invited several beautiful

kindergarten teachers to sing in the video. Among them is Teacher Huang. Teacher Huang perfectly

interpreted this children’s song with her sweet smile and healing voice. She also used her professional dance

skills, combined with simple and cute moves. Her performance is eye-catching and pleasing to the eye. In this way, Teacher Huang became an Internet celebrity overnight. Her fan base skyrocketed, from a

few thousand to millions. Her video views have also soared, from tens of thousands to hundreds of millions. Her live broadcast room is also extremely popular, with tens of thousands of people watching every time it

starts. (3) Her income has also risen, and it is said that she can earn 800,000 in one night. That’s more than

her annual salary. Teacher Huang’s popularity has surprised many people, and also made many people curious. Is there a

team behind her? Was she signed by a certain platform or company? Was she spotted by a certain director or

producer? Was she popularized by a celebrity or bigwig?

In fact, there is no team behind Miss Huang. She has not been signed by any platform or company. Nor

was she picked up by any director or producer. She has not been popularized by any celebrities or bigwigs. She is just an ordinary kindergarten teacher, a girl who likes to sing and dance, and a person with dreams. Her popularity has enhanced the status and influence of early childhood education, spread positive energy

and happiness, and inspired people’s dreams and creativity.

“A man in Escombe, Queensburgh, thought it was strange that his Rottweiler was pushing him away

from his sofa that he sits on every afternoon. He found the dog had been barking at the back of the sofa for

two days. He moved the sofa, and there was a Black Mamba,” wrote Evans. Black mambas are highly poisonous snakes. If left untreated with antivenom(抗蛇毒血清), their bites

have a deadly rate of 100 percent. Black mambas can reach lengths of 10 feet or longer, and are

unbelievably fast moving, traveling at speeds of up to 12.5 miles per hour. Symptoms swiftly set in after the

bite, including a metallic taste, drooping eyelids, blurred vision, slurring speech, muscle twitches, impaired

movement and eventually respiratory paralysis and cardiac arrest. On average, this takes 7 to 15 hours after

the bite. Evans says in the Facebook post that this snake was around 2.2 meters long, or 7.2 feet. Evans explains

that the Rottweiler then rushed in to attack the now-exposed snake, but was grabbed by its owner before it

got within striking distance. “That might not sound like much, but I was super impressed by the owner’s actions. Not everyone

could react fast like that in a moment like that,” Evans wrote. “I cannot tell you how many calls I get. People

phone me while their dog is attacking the snake. I suppose panic takes over. The way this gentleman reacted

is exactly how one should react if a snake is encountered. Never let your dog out to kill a snake for you.” The black mamba was caught by Evans and removed from the house, leaving the owner and the dog

safe. It was really nice to see the love the family had for their dog, which clearly loved them back. 1. Why did the Rottweiler force his owner away from the sofa?

A. The dog wanted his owner to take him out to play. B. There was a poisonous animal behind the sofa. C. It was the dog’s habit of barking at the back of the sofa. D. The dog pushed his owner to go out to exercise. 2. What can we know about black mambas according to paragraph 2?

A. Black mambas are the most poisonous snakes in the world. B. The person bitten by black mambas can’t live without antivenom. C. Black mambas can move as fast as a normal person. D. The black mambas found in the man’s home is quite long. 3. What’s Evan’s opinion on the instant reaction of the owner?

Perhaps you’ve heard that you should take 10,000 steps every day for your health. But that’s not

actually a hard-and-fast rule. Research is finding that you might be able to take fewer steps as you age and

still get serious benefits. If you’re over age 60, for example, you might be able to cut a 10,000-step goal by almost half and stay

healthy. “There is no single magic number,” says Amanda Paluch, a physical activity researcher and assistant

professor of kinesiology (人体运动学) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. In one large analysis of the research on this question, published in 2022 in the journal Lancet Public

Health, scientists found that the risk of premature death decreases as your daily step count increases. The

people who walked about 5,800 steps a day, for example, had a 40 percent lower risk of premature death

compared with those who took the fewest steps — about 3,600 a day. Getting in your steps — even well below 10,000 — may have other benefits, too. In another 2022 study, taking just under 4,000 daily steps was linked with a lower risk of dementia(痴呆). The risk of developing

heart disease and cancer seems to follow a similar pattern, with uncertain benefits beyond about 10,000 steps. High step counts may also be associated with a lower risk for sleep apnea, reflux, depression and obesity, according to a 2022 study in Nature Medicine.“It is likely that with each decade, you may require fewer

steps per day to create a physiological response that could lead to health benefits,” Paluch says. 1. How many steps are advised to take every day for the elderly?

A. 10,000. B. 3,600. C. 8,000. D. 5,800. 2. What may be a benefit of increasing daily steps according to researchers’ findings?

A. Zero risk of heart disease. B. An improvement in lifestyle. C. A slimmer chance of dying young. D. Increased survival rates in cancer patients. 3. What can be inferred from Paluch’s remarks in the last paragraph?

A. We’d better cut down on steps day by day. B. People need a physical checkup every ten years. C. One needs fewer steps to stay fit as he or she ages. D. A well-organized plan contributes to our health. 4. Who may benefit most from the text?

A. Professional athletes. B. Normal senior citizens. C. Established researchers. D. Bodybuilding enthusiasts. E

products appear to be backed by little or no high-quality scientific evidence. “The wide range of health and nutrition claims made by infant(婴儿) formula products are often not

backed by scientific references,” said Dr Ka Yan Cheung and Loukia Petrou, the joint first co-authors of the

study. “When they are, the evidence is often weak.” Cheung and Petrou, from Imperial College London, added: “We also found that many ingredients(成分)

were linked to several claims, and some claims were linked to multiple ingredients. It’s essential that the

industry provides accurate and reliable information to consumers.” The study found that existing marketing rules on formula milk are failing to stop companies from using

unidentified claims to promote their products. The research examined formula products across 15 different countries and found that most products

carried at least one health or nutrition claim. The authors highlighted how such claims are questioned and

are banned in some countries. The researchers found that the most common claim types were

“helps/supports development of brain and/or eyes and/or nervous system” and “helps/supports growth and

development”. When references were provided, 56% reported findings of clinical trials while the rest were reviews, opinion pieces or other types of research including animal studies, the BMJ reported. Only 14% of citations

that referred to clinical trials were prospectively registered, and 90% of claims that cited registered clinical

trials carried a high risk of prejudice. The BMJ added that 88% of registered trials had authors who either

had received formula industry funding or were directly associated with industry. Dr Daniel Munblit and Dr Robert Boyle, senior co-authors for the study from Imperial, added: “There

is a clear need for greater regulation and oversight to ensure that these claims are supported by sound

scientific evidence and to protect the health and well-being of our youngest populations.” 1. What can we say about the formula milk industry?

A. It’s new. B. It’s low-profit. C. It’s small in scale. D. It’s not well-regulated. 2. What can we learn from the text?

A. The nutrition claims would help product sales. B. The formula milk industry is strictly regulated. C. Formula milk companies promoted their products honestly. D. I’m Rebecca Felgate. Ten years ago, I put on a ski suit for the first time, excited and afraid. I had

always loved the great outdoors, but it was only when I learned how to cross the snow-covered slopes that I

realized how great the outdoors actually was. The delight of fresh air and the joy of gliding toward an alpine town surrounded by whole mountain

views soon melted away my fears. Since then, skiing has granted me access to some of the most fascinating

destinations on Earth, including the Canadian Rockies, my soul place. But as luck would have it, the sport would also give me the worst moment of my life. Last January, I

fell down the mountain at Lake Louise Ski Resort, and what had started out as a birthday trip ended with a

journey in a medic’s blood wagon. I injured badly and received an operation. The road to recovery was a mental and physical one. I couldn’t walk for eight weeks and had to sit still.

Eradajere Oleita thinks she may have a solution for two of our country’s constant problems: garbage

and poverty. It’s called the Chip Bag Project. The 26-year-old student and environmentalist from Detroit is

asking a favor of local snack lovers: Rather than throw your empty chip bags into the trash, donate them so

she can turn them into sleeping bags for the homeless. Chip eaters drop off their empty bags from two locations in Detroit: a print shop and a clothing store, where Oleita and her volunteer helpers collect them. After they sanitize (消毒) the chip bags in soapy hot

water, they slice them open, lay them flat, and iron them together. They use padding and liners from old

coats to line the insides. It takes about four hours to sew a sleeping bag, and each takes around 150 to 300 chip bags, depending

on whether they’re single-serve or family size. The result is a sleeping bag that is waterproof, lightweight, and easy to carry around. Since its start in 2020, the Chip Bag Project has collected more than 800,000 chip bags and, as of last

December, created 110 sleeping bags. Sure, it would be simpler to raise the money to buy new sleeping bags. But that’s only half the goal for

Oleita whose family moved to the United States from Nigeria a decade ago with the hope of attaining a

better life. “We are dedicated to making an impact not only socially, but environmentally,” she says.

When I opened my laptop on Tuesday to take my first run at GPT-4, the new artificial intelligence

language model from OpenAI, I was a little nervous. After all, my last extended encounter with an A.I. chatbot — the one built into Microsoft’s Bing search engine — ended with the chatbot trying to break up my

marriage. Among the tech crowd in San Francisco, GPT-4’s arrival had been anticipated with heated discussions. Before its first public appearance, for months rumors (流言) went around about its specifics. “I heard it has

100 trillion parameters(参数).” “I heard it got a 1,600 on the SAT.” These rumors may not have been true. But they implied how jarring the technology’s abilities can make humans feel. For a few hours, I tested GPT-4 — which is included with ChatGPT Plus, the $20-a month version of

OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT — with different types of questions, hoping to uncover some of its strengths

and weaknesses. On the positive side, GPT-4 is a powerful engine for creativity, and there is no telling the new kinds of

scientific, cultural and educational production it may enable. We already know that A.I. can help scientists

develop new drugs, increase the productivity of programmers and detect certain types of cancer. GPT-4

could enhance all of that. OpenAI is already working with organizations like the Khan Academy (which is

using GPT-4 to create A.I. tutors for students) and Be My Eyes (a company that makes technology to help

blind people navigate the world). And now that developers can include GPT-4 in their own apps, we may
