Part Ⅰ

(Vowel)

 she, these; keep, week; each, leave; piece, field

 //: music, gift; eraser, relax

//: happy, heavy

 chess, spend; bread, health

; /E(r)/ /E/: across, panda; camera, parent; carrot, lion; autumn, difficult

/E(r)/: number, corner; surprise, Saturday

 美; /:(r)/ /B:/: dance, after, class, fast (a 在 n, f, s 前)

/B:(r)/: large, farmer

 some, money, love, nothing (o 在 m, n, v, th 前)

summer, lucky

;  /C:/: walk, tall; August, autumn; draw, law; bought, thought

/C:(r)/: store, before; door, floor; horse, important

X美  clock, follow

wash, want (a 在 w 后)

 cool, noodle; rule, June

 book, look; could, would; pull, push

 cake, station; rain, afraid; day, play; eight, neighbour

 bike, life; pie, lie; fight, high; cry, shy

 join, noise; boy, enjoy

 home, those, open, sofa; boat, soap; blow, grow

old, cold (o 在 ld 前)

 house, around; down, shower

美  dear, near; beer, deer; here

美  hair, chair; pear, bear; where, there

美  poor; tour; sure

watch、clock、sorry。

knees 中的长元音 /i:/ 后面接浊辅音 /z/,此时 niece 中的 /i:/ 比 knees中的短。

(Consonant)

 pen, cup  chicken, lunch

 back, club 

vegetable, giraffe; orange, village;

juice, jacket

 table, quite  habit, behind

 date, read  ring, bread; write, wrong

 camp, music; speak, week; black, clock  month, swim; climb, lamb; autumn

 game, dog; guess, guest  nature, ten; know, knife



family, father; laugh, enough; photo,

elephant  long, crossing

 very, leave  look, July (清晰 ); rule (含糊 )

 thank, tooth  watch, week; what, white

 weather, there  yellow, yogurt

 rice, decide; sorry, seven; chess, lesson  trip, travel

 nose, cousin; zero, size  drive, children

 shoes, finish; sure, Asian; delicious;

machine  cats, habits

 usually, pleasure  cards, sounds

Part Ⅱ

(Word Stress)

1. ten·nis soc·cer af·ter

2. re·sult cor·rect com·plete

3. dif·fi·cult ham·burg·er tel·e·phone

4. ba·na·na com·put·er ex·pen·sive

5. 7con·ver·sa·tion 7com·pe·ti·tion pro·7nun·ci·a·tion

6. sports 7centre living 7room shopping 7bag

7. re·cord (n) BrE // NAmE //

re·cord (v) BrE // NAmE //

pro·gress (n) BrE // NAmE /; /

pro·gress (v) BrE // NAmE //

8. The car broke down.

“动词 + 副词”的动词短语:第一重音通常落在副词上,特别是副词位于句子末尾时。

9. I can’t figure out what to do.

“动词 + 介词”的动词短语:重音通常落在动词而不是介词上。

二、练习

听录音,在单词(或复合词)重读的部分下面画线。

1. mis·take in·terest·ing af·ter·noon eigh·teen

2. com·put·er to·mor·row res·tau·rant mu·se·um

3. in·form in·for·ma·tion com·mu·ni·cate com·mu·ni·ca·tion

4. bas·ket·ball play·ground shopping centre sitting room

M: 10How do you fi nd the cost of living in this city?

W: 10All in all, everything is expensive, including clothing, housing, and travelling.

M: 11So, what do you spend most on?

W: 11Well, trains, I think. For food, if I cook myself, it’s not expensive at all. For clothing, I bring my clothes here from my home

country, where they’re nice and cheap. But every week, I have to spend more than 100 pounds on the trains.

M: Then what’s the social life like?

W: I’m a very social person. I love meeting new people. Thankfully, I don’t drink nor smoke, 12 so the only cost is maybe tickets to

the cinemas.

(Text 9)

W: Professor Brown, which do you like better, writing or teacher training?

M: Well, I enjoy both very much. In fact, I wouldn’t want to give up either. 13These days most of my time is spent on writing.

W: What plans do you have for the future?

M: 13Now that we have completed a textbook, we plan to develop more textbooks for other markets. People sometimes say to me, “You

work too hard.” 14The truth is I enjoy what I do, and I don’t consider it to be work.

W: What do you like to do in your leisure time?

M: I like playing the piano. 15 I’m fortunate to have been born with the ability to play the piano by ear. If I remember a music piece,

I can play it. I also write music. Although I’m a language teacher, I can’t write words to songs. I have to turn to others for the

words. 16Actually, I have more confi dence in my book-writing ability than my song-writing ability.

(Text 10)

W: Hello, everyone. I’d like to talk about my fi rst day in senior secondary school. 17 I woke up this morning, excited but nervous

because it is the start of a new chapter in my life. I’m a senior secondary school student from now on. Thousands of thoughts

rushed through my mind. Will I feel nervous when I talk to new classmates? Will I have nice teachers?

At 7 am I put on my coat and smiled in front of the mirror hoping for a good day. My bag weighed me down, but I stood up tall

and proud. 20 I arrived at the school hall at 8 am. 18First we had a tour of the school and there’s a lot to fi nd out at school. I just

hoped I could remember it all when I needed to. 19Then we headed for our classroom to meet our classmates. I was happy with

my classmates as they were all nice. In the afternoon we got to know our teachers a bit more and they were friendly and helpful.

20At 5 pm when I knew the day was over, I didn’t know why I wasn’t nervous any more. Senior secondary school may be full of

challenges and problems can arise, but it’s just like primary school or middle school, and I’m prepared to face them. I love senior

secondary school now. I will go to school with great expectations.

M: I read some books or watch TV. How about you? Do you tend to socialise with friends or be alone?

W: I tend to socialise with friends.

W: Hi, Mike. I want to buy a laptop this afternoon. Would you like to come with me?

M: Actually, I can’t. I have to revise for the English exam next week.

(Text 4)

W: Jack, you are reading again. You haven’t recovered from your eye problem.

M: Sorry, Mum. From time to time, I just can’t help it.

(Text 5)

W: It’s really hard for me to remember those rules of grammar in French.

M: I think it’s best to learn grammar by hearing and reading as much French as you can. Most native speakers never learn the rules.

(Text 6)

M: Wilma, you were responsible for the market research study for our new digital camera, right?

W: That’s right. ⑥All of the study group members liked that the camera is very light, so it’s easy to carry around day-to-day.

M: How much do you think it will be sold at?

W: I heard that it will cost somewhere between $250 and $280.

M: That’s not bad. ⑦But we need to make sure it doesn’t cost more than our competitors’ models. Let’s bring that up when we meet

with the marketing team after lunch today.

(Text 7)

M: Hi, Ann. How’s your new apartment working out?

W: Well, that’s what I’m telling you about. You see, I’ve decided to look for a new place.

M: Why? I thought you liked it.

W: Oh, I do. I like the style of it, ⑧but the distance is just killing me. Do you think you could help?

M: OK. So, what kind of place are you looking for?

W: Well, I’d like to share an apartment with one or two roommates within walking distance to school.

M: How much do you want to spend a month?

W: Uh, under £200, ⑨and I’d like an apartment with a large living room and two bedrooms.

(Text 8)

M: Lisa, how do you get your news every day?

W: Well, I get most of my news from TV. I also read newspapers. Radio is my last choice and I seldom go online. How about you?

M: I hardly listen to the radio either, but 10 I do love reading news on the Internet. It is defi nitely more convenient.

W: You should be careful with the information online. Much of it cannot be trusted at all. By the way, what kind of news are you

interested in?

M: 11 I mainly focus on sports news. What about you?

W: 12 I enjoy watching quite a number of news programmes on TV. Many of them centre on business, art and international politics.

M: Well, I have a feeling that the news reporters on TV usually say similar things based on the same information. And some of the

news is very sad.

W: I know what you mean. 12But you have to keep up with what’s happening around the world, even though it makes you feel

bad sometimes.

(Text 9)

M: Thanks, Kate, for showing us Happening. 13Where did your idea of starting a newspaper for teenagers come from?

W: Well, 13 I used to spend a lot of time reading newspapers when I was in middle school. But my friends didn’t read them much. So,

I suppose my idea came from that time.

M: Why did you go for an online newspaper?

W: 14Well, I did a course about news at university. I also had the chance to do a course on website building, and that infl uenced my

decision. 15The main reason was that I wanted to increase young people’s interest in updated news, but I also realised that there

might be a chance of making it a successful business. I felt that there was a big need for an online newspaper aimed at teenagers.

So I talked to a few university friends, and when we graduated we went ahead. We had real diffi culty in borrowing money from

banks so we got nothing at all. 16Finally, we managed to borrow some money from my parents and we decided to work on it for

six months.

(Text 10)

M: Talking about volunteer work, over half of Americans give a few hours a week to help in their communities, their churches, or in

their children’s schools. These people are volunteers. Today we’ll get to know two of them.

Walter volunteers for “Meals on Wheels”. 17On Tuesdays, he sends hot meals to people. At 11:30 on Tuesday morning, he drives

to a church hall and picks up the meals. He drives to 11 homes in his town. Most of the people live alone, but there are a few

couples. Many of the people are older, and most are over 80. They can’t cook because they have back or leg problems. Walter

says hello and talks for a few minutes. 18 It takes Walter about two hours to send the meals.

19Kate volunteers at Children’s Hospital on Thursday afternoons. Some of the children have serious illnesses. Some have mothers

who are unable to take care of them. The babies need lots of love and attention. She holds the babies, feeds them, talks to them,

and sings to them. 20Kate says, “I give them love, and they give me love in return.”

more vegetables.

W: Sounds very strange. I guess hamburgers and French fries cause stress, right?

W: Good afternoon, sir. How can I help you?

M: Well, I picked up a cell phone here the other day, but there is something wrong with the screen.

W: I see, sir. I can get you a new one right away.

M: Actually, ⑧I was wondering if I could take another model instead? I was told that the new X-100 model has far more functions.

W: Absolutely! ⑨This model was on the market a week ago and they’re selling very well. Now, there are only a few left. Of course

W: Hello, Mr Johnson. This is Kim Smith. 12 I’m calling about the position of senior editor that I saw on the Internet.

M: Well, thanks for calling. 10We’ll be having interviews next Monday and Tuesday. Are you free those days?

W: Unfortunately, 11 I’m going to be out of town next Monday. Can I have an interview on Friday? I’ll be back that day.

M: Well, that’s the plan. We need to fi nd someone to fi ll the position quickly. In other words, if you’re not free next Monday or

Tuesday, I’m afraid we won’t be able to consider you for the job.

W: OK, I think I’d better change my plan. 10 11 I will leave town next Tuesday morning.

(Text 9)

M: You know what, 13 I have noticed that I’m 40 pounds heavier. That’s terrible.

W: Our jobs require us to be in front of computer screens for long workdays.

M: It’s said the offi ce worker sits in the offi ce for about 10 hours a day.

W: It’s so bad, 14 but to me, the worst part is that I don’t know how to reduce the pressure and tension from my work. I just can’t fall

asleep all night.

M: Well, everyone suff ers from stress at some time in their life. We can’t remove stress from our life entirely, but we can make

some changes. 15What about fi nding time to work out in a gym?

W: Well, I prefer outdoor exercise, such as running in a park, and climbing in a mountain area.

M: All right. 16Let’s go climbing this weekend. I need to get into shape and you can take your mind off work for a while.

(Text 10)

W: Hello, everyone. My name is Amy. When facing stress, someone may choose to talk with their parents, some may do a lot of

exercise to reduce stress, 17 but the way I always take to deal with stress is to write down why I feel so sad or such kind of thing

and then I will feel better.

18Sometimes, I will do some exercise too, mainly running. And one of the by-products from exercising is that I can sleep through

the night, 7.5 to 8 hours. I don’t get up through the night, which helps me a lot to be prepared for tomorrow’s job.

I’d also love to have a piece of dark chocolate, which helps me reduce stress to some extent. However, many people will overeat when

they are stressed out. 19They stay up and eat up all those cookies without thinking about it, which is going to make things even worse.

Sometimes, I will just cry, crying out the sadness. 20 If I feel too sad to cry, I will listen to some blue music. Sometimes, it will take

a half day, but often, it will only take half an hour to light myself up again to do the remaining things.

Everyone has his own method to deal with stress, so, I think, it doesn’t matter what kind of way you choose to get over it, but how

long you will go out of it and you do go out of it that matter more.

(Text 10)

M: Well, 17 you know I spent my summer vacation in Britain for two months. And I’m very glad to share what I saw and heard there.

Three days after I arrived in London I got to know several British high school students. They told me a lot about their school life,

but what interested me most is the gap year.

18These days more and more students are choosing to take a gap year. They have decided to do something entirely diff erent for a year

before starting their university studies. Why are gap years so popular? Well, in the past, everybody believed it was better for students

to complete their studies without a break. These days, students know that if they take a gap year they will get confi dence as well as

experience. 19Besides, many university teachers think it’s a good idea too. Gap year students often study harder at university.

The most popular thing to do during the gap year is travel. Many students like to visit America, Canada, Japan, China and India,

20 but the most popular country to visit is Australia. However, gap year travel is no holiday. Some students do voluntary work.

Others fi nd a job to get work experience and make some money that helps to pay for their fi rst year at university.

W: Paul, you’re the only child in your family. How do you feel about that?

M: I’m an only child and I was erm … happy as a young child. I was very lucky. 13 I had fourteen cousins and most of them lived

in the same town that I grew up in until I was ten, so we all played together and studied together. 14 I suppose it wasn’t until we

moved away from there that I think it became diffi cult being an only child. 15When I was a teenager, I was on my own, and I

had nobody to compare notes with or to prepare for the exam with and I think it was quite hard really. Although I had all of my

parents’ attention, I didn’t always want it. I wanted to move away from my family a little bit.

W: 16What about now?

the subject of “world travel”. The successful writer of travel books, Bob Johnson, children’s writer, Jenny Paige and short story

writer, Alan Dobson, and the editor of a famous magazine will choose the winner. There are some great prizes: fi rst prize is £5,000;

second prize is £2,000 and third prize is £1,000. 19The winning stories will be seen in the magazine, New Authors. If you’re

W: I’m sorry to hear that. Did you try to deal with that?

M: Yes. 11 I tried to reduce stress … to relax. I changed my big house into a small one and reduced my four cars to two. Then I took

a stress-free job. 12Now I have much time to spend with my family and I’m happy.

W: How nice! OK, it’s time for today’s programme. Thank you, Bill.

(Text 9)

W: Hey, James. How’s the job search going?

M: Hi, Sharon. I had no idea it would take so much time. It sure makes it diffi cult to prepare for fi nal exams. How about you?

W: I was lucky. 13There seems to be a shortage of high school teachers now. I applied to three schools, and each one off ered me a position.

M: That’s great. Which one did you like?

W: I haven’t decided yet. Of course, 14 it would be easiest for me to stay here in New York or go back home to Boston. But I may go

to California.

M: That would be a big move.

W: So, tell me about your plans.

M: Well, I applied to six newspapers. Last week, I had an interview with New York Times.

W: 15How did it go?

M: 15Not so well. I think they’re looking for people with at least one or two years’ work experience.

W: Have you had any other interviews?

M: No, not yet. It seems that everyone wants to be a writer these days. There just aren’t that many jobs out there.

W: That’s too bad.

M: Yes. I had hoped to have a job lined up by graduation. That doesn’t seem likely now.

W: 16What will you do if you can’t fi nd a job?

M: 16 If not, I’ll begin working on a master’s degree in the fall.

W: Good luck!

(Text 10)

W: Hello, boys and girls. 20 If you have not been to Adventure World, then you must visit us this summer. We are not far from Upton, so we

are easy to fi nd. Adventure World is open after the winter break on 18 March but you can book tickets ahead of time from 12 March.

Now, how much does it cost? Well, tickets for grown-ups are sixteen pounds but children under fi fteen only pay twelve pounds

fi fty. There are also family tickets for forty-fi ve pounds. 17 Included in that price are special shows. On Saturday these are for

children younger than ten, and on Sunday, for those who are eleven and over.

This year Adventure World is better than ever. 18There is a new ride called Splashdown and it is very fast — it goes at seventyfi ve kilometres per hour! That’s thirty kilometres per hour faster than any of our other rides.

We have also improved our zoo. 19As well as our popular lions and tigers, we now have monkeys too. They have their own house

where you can watch them playing and having fun.

20Come to Adventure World this summer — you’ll have a great time!
