Denmark based Jules Jürgensen has been producing watches
since 1740, and since then have strived to keep the tradition of the
best of the old, adding the most valued of each new advancement
in the art of watchmaking. In the 1930s the watchmaking world
saw the introduction of the jump hour watch, a complex movement
that balanced the regulation of power and the precision of
keeping time simultaneosly. Unlike traditional watches that use
constant force, jump hour watches require a power peak
for jumping the hour disc, while the minute disc flows in the more
traditional manner. The complexity of these watches contrasts with
their simple and streamlined art deco inspired designs. While many
brands like Rolex and Audemars Piguet produced watches of this
style, Jules Jürgensen also jumped to the challenge, and produced
the current example in an 18k white gold case. Considering its age,
the watch is in excellent condition, and includes its original box,
certificate, spare strap, all in pristine shape. It is a rare and prime
example of the iconic jump hour watch that is beloved by many
vintage collectors.

Rolex’s Tru-beat, introduced in the mid-1950s, represents one of the
rarest and most overlooked watch models from the brand. At first
glance, the untrained eye might consider it a simple quartz powered
timepiece, with a “dead beat” second hand that clicks once per
second unlike the smooth flow of mechanical watches. Yet while this
complication has no practical use, it is fascinating in theory. By making the normal sweep second look like it has fewer segments, the
watch is essentially tricking the eye, creating an optical illusion. The
watch houses the Caliber 1040 which runs at 18,000 bph, but we
only see 3,600 bph (one tick per second) on the dial. It does this by
using two gears with a spring between them on the seconds pinion.
These gears are locked and unlocked by a small fork that makes
the small sweeps into one big jump per second, thus fully realizing
this complication decades before the advent of quartz watches.
Rolex Tru-Beat was not very popular when it was released and had
few variations, ultimately being discontinued in 1965. Yet today it is
a highly sought-after model by collectors for its rarity and uniqueness. The current example, which is in good condition and includes
the original box and three spare links, is a rare opportunity for the
discerning vintage Rolex collector to add this peculiar example of
timekeeping to their collection.

The Rolex Explorer II 1655 first appeared on the market in 1971 and
continued the tradition of the earlier Explorer models which were first
introduced in 1953. The watch was originally conceived to accompany speleologists on their cave exploration expeditions and as such
was designed with extreme durability in mind. Due to the challenges
of determining time of day in these eternally dark conditions, the
watch features a fixed bezel with 24-hour display and a special
orange 24-hour hand that can be set to distinguish day from night
hours, thus becoming lovingly known amongst collectors as the
\"Freccione\", or Italian for \"big arrow\". Due to its limited commercial
success and short production period, the reference 1655 is today
one of the more sought-after vintage Rolex models. The current
lot is in good condition and includes the maker's presentation box,
certificate, service papers and booklet all in excellent condition. It is
a great opportunity for those looking to add this very special vintage
Rolex timepiece to their collections.

The Rolex Daytona is a legendary watch that represents the apex of
Rolex in terms of collectability. Over the years the watch has seen a
major evolution in terms of case size and the transition from manual
winding to in-house automatic movements, but it has always kept its
original spirit. Reference 6265 was introduced in 1969 with reference
6263, and was produced in steel, gold and silver. It uses the manual
wind caliber 727 that runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and was essentially the workhorse movement for Rolex Daytona until the launch
of the Zenith based 4030 in 1988. The current watch is a beautiful
example of this manual wind era of Daytona watches and comes with
beautifully preserved accompaniments. It would be a worthy addition
to any collection of Rolex enthusiasts.

Beyond icons like Rolex Submariner, Datejust and Day-Date, the
Daytona has emerged as the most sought after and collectible Rolex in
history. Yet this was not always the case, as the early days of the Cosmograph saw the watch shunned by collectors and general consumers alike, and it was typical for many models to sit idly on store shelves
with little to no interest. Yet the fortune of the Daytona started shifting
in the 1970s when, according to horological legend, an Italian Daytona
collector and enthusiast spotted a picture of famed actor Paul Newman wearing an exotic dial example on one of his movie posters, and
the rest is history. Due to the surge in popularity of the Daytona and
Paul Newman connection, and the introduction of the first automatic
Daytona reference 16520, using the Zenith-powered 4030, the watch
started becoming more coveted and appreciated.
By the turn of the century with the introduction of the 6-digit 116520
and the first automatic in-house movement calibre 4130, Daytona had
sealed its position as the most desired Rolex timepiece and was the
first Rolex watch that became difficult to obtain through authorized
dealers. Yet it was the famous auction of Paul Newman’s very own
Paul Newman Daytona that took the fever to new heights. In 2017 it
hammered for nearly USD $18 million, becoming the most expensive
watch ever sold at a North American auction. From that point the
Daytona’s rise has been stratospheric, and whether it be in stainless
steel, precious metal or the famed 50th Anniversary reference 116506
in platinum (Lot 819) the Daytona has become, for better or for worse,
the bellwether for the entire watch industry in terms rising grey market
prices, scarcity at retail and record-breaking auction results.
While it is common to see a number of modern or vintage Rolex
Daytonas at any given auction, it is rarer to see a collection that spans
various eras in the history of this iconic watch, from the manual winding era and 4 digit references in like the 6265 (Lot 813) to the 5-digit
Zenith era reference 16520 (Lot 815) to the 6-digit modern references with in-house calibres like the references 116520, 116509 and
116506 (Lots 817-819). Bonhams is proud to showcase the evolution
of the Daytona with this grouping of timepieces that will surely be a
treat for Rolex enthusiasts and collectors.

The Rolex Daytona 16520 contains the iconic Calibre 4030 based on
the Zenith El Primero movement. As the first automatic in the Rolex
Daytona range the enthusiasm for this model continues to grow in
the present day, with many collectors forgoing the later references
116520 and 116500 with the more modern and technically more
impressive 4130 movement. As the Zenith Daytona slowly moves into
the neo-vintage and vintage categories, examples like this one which
is in excellent condition will make a compelling option to consider for
both long time and new Daytona collectors.

Neo-Vintage Watches
For most of the history of watches there have been two types
that most collectors have understood, modern and vintage.
In the case of modern watches, always improving methods of
machining, and advances in movement technology and material science have made these timepieces reliable and allowed
even casual watch collectors to enjoy the most cutting-edge
technology. Vintage, while less reliable and dated in terms of
technology, evoked the more poetic side of collecting, with a
romanticism that only a timepiece that has stood the test of
time can exude.
Yet in the past decade, as watch collecting grew and matured
through the advent of social media, a new and evolving third
type or category has emerged: the neo-vintage watch. In a
way neo-vintage watches do not actually exist in a separate
category yet pull from both the modern and vintage worlds to
create a wholly new type of category of timepiece for collectors to consider. This period, largely considered between 1980
and the early 2000s, saw technologies improve, with more
precise machining and innovations like the use of silicon and
other such materials to improve timekeeping accuracy, and
durability. In many ways, through their designs and harking to
the traditions of watchmaking throughout the century, many of
these watches were a continuation of vintage watch designs,
rather than a departure. At the end of the century such watches fell out of favor with collectors, who felt that they represented a sort of “identity crisis” in terms of their designs, being too
old to be appreciated by modern enthusiasts, but too new to
be acknowledged by vintage watch collectors.
Over time, however, this category of watches has taken on a
newfound resurgence, and alongside the rise of key independent watchmakers in this era and watch brands refocusing
on great mechanical watchmaking techniques after the quartz
crisis, neo-vintage and its mixed influences now have the
eyes of collectors looking for great timepieces at a great value
and is poised to become the next truly significant category in
watch collecting. The following examples featured in this sale
like Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 3700 (Lot 844), Collection Privée Cartier Paris or “CPCP” Cloche (Lot 823) and
Asymétrique (Lot 824), Breguet Classique Grand Complication Ref. 3657PT (Lot 825) represent some of the greatest
neo-vintage timepieces and are sure to be in the minds of
collectors for years to come.

Cartier is one of the most famous maisons in the world, and for good
reason. Their designs in jewelry and watchmaking are unparalleled
in their grace and beauty. Some of the most sought-after examples
when it comes to watchmaking are Cartier ‘Paris’ signed low on the
dial, and the rarity and beauty of these timepieces cannot be understated, especially in comparison to the re-editions of these timepieces. The current example, an 18k yellow gold Tonneau Cintrée is a
testament to the sheer elegance of these watches, with their subtle
flat chamfered edges that meet at clean angles. The dial’s subtle
guilloche detailing contrasts with its blue sword hands, and the distinctly Cartier cabochon gemstone crown. Although the provenance
for Cartier, Paris timepieces are difficult to ascertain, the stamped
hallmark ‘Made in France’ on the case back all but assures that this
example is very rare and limited in production. A truly beautiful example in very good condition of a bygone era in Cartier, Paris history.

There is no doubt when it comes to independent watchmaking that
Franck Muller was a pivotal figure in the 1990s with his creative
designs and complications. This Franck Muller Perpetual Calendar
reference 7000QP shows his unique style with its two-tone black and
silver dial that has eleven blue steel markers that brought a new and
novel expression of the Perpetual Calendar. The timepiece features
sub dials for the date, day, moon phase, and leap year, but it also
has a half-circle retrograde display for the month. The watch highlights Franck Muller's originality and courage to break the rules and is
a prime example of his impact on the industry. The current watch is in
its very original condition and is a beautiful example for collectors to
consider as an addition to their collections.

Cartier launched the Collection Privée Cartier Paris, or CPCP for
short, in 1998. This was a return to their roots, with a focus on design and mechanics. For the next decade they revived some of their
classic models from the past, such as the Cintrée and the Tank Chinoise. They also used manual-winding movements from renowned
makers like Piaget, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and Renaud & Papi. This was
a response to the growing interest in mechanical watches after the
Quartz Crisis, which had damaged Cartier’s reputation after going for
the mass market with too many quartz-powered, ladies’ watches.
The Collection Privée Cartier Paris watches are now gaining more
attention from collectors, who appreciate their historical and aesthetic value. This is no more apparent than in the two watches that
comprise the famed collection in this sale, the Tank Asymétrique
\"Jumbo\" (Lot 824), and the Cloche (Lot 823). Both watches
employ unconventional case shapes, and yet their designs are still
somehow classical and restrained in nature, with elegant guilloche
that emanates from the rosette motif on the dial, with a “Cartier
28 | BONHAMS
Paris” signature. Both watches also take inspiration from forgotten
designs from Cartier’s past, with the Asymétrique inspired by the
Tank Oblique, envisioned for drivers in 1936, and the Cloche that was
originally created in 1922 as a bell-shaped case and drivers style dial,
\"cloche\" being the French word for bell.
The CPCP came to an end in 2008 and slowly faded into obscurity
for over a decade as larger case sizes and sports watches became all the rage. Yet in the past few years they have been gaining
popularity amongst collectors, especially as neo-vintage watches
have gained more traction in the market. Both the Asymétrique
and Cloche, limited to 150 and 100 pieces respectively, are a rare
opportunity to obtain these unconventional designs from Cartier most
iconic collection of the past century.

Originally built in 1929, the Calibre 101 consists of 98 tiny parts
weighing only one gram and is to this day the smallest mechanical
movement ever created. It is one of the crowning achievements from
Jaeger-LeCoultre in terms of movement innovation. Its assembly is
a specialist process that only a select number of watchmakers can
master, and thus only a few Calibre 101 movements are made each
year on special order, thus making Calibre 101 watches some of the
most collectible from the maison. The watch Queen Elizabeth II wore
at her coronation in 1953 was powered by a Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 101, and the Calibre has graced the wrists of many celebrities
and dignitaries alike. The current lot, with its full diamond-set case
and bezel, is a rare and beautiful example of the Calibre 101 and
would be a great addition to any watch collection.

Of all Swiss watchmakers there is none that has been more important in terms of innovations, movement breakthroughs and pushing
the boundaries and the science of watchmaking as Jaeger-LeCoultre. For many years “La Grande Maison” provided many of its magical
movements to the likes of Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and
Vacheron Constantin for use in their own creations. The term “the
watchmaker’s watchmaker” is one that is well and truly deserved.
Continuing this tradition of movement innovation, in 2012 Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced at SIHH a first of its kind: Duomètre à Sphérotourbillon, a new addition to the already celebrated Duometer collection,
with the inclusion of a tourbillon that had never been seen before.
The tourbillon rotates on two axes for a three-dimensional rotation
to counteract the effects of gravity placed on the movement in any
position. The addition of a cylindrical balance wheel adds to the
rarity of this invention and is truly one of the most unique executions
of a tourbillon that has ever been created. The current lot, limited in
edition, in excellent condition and with its full suite of accessories, is
a truly living and breathing testimony to the mastery of horological
innovation that is Jaeger-LeCoultre, and is a rare and opportunity to
add one of the finest examples of a tourbillon ever created to any
collection.

Wheels™ Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Racing Works Edition” with opening gullwing doors, a detailed interior, and racing graphics. It is one
of the most detailed Hot Wheels™ models ever produced with only
50 pieces in existence. Both the watch and the model car feature
the number 68, which refers to the founding years of IWC and Hot
Wheels™. The current example is in mint condition and features the
maker’s original metal toolbox with instruction manual, a booklet, and
a limitation plate with the individual corresponding set number. This is
a great opportunity for true motorsport fans to obtain one of the most
exciting cars and watch collaborations timepieces released in recent
years.

Reference PAM00767 is an upgrade to the PAM00578 but with
aesthetic upgrades like a blue flange to match the blued hands and
markers. The watch is distinct for including a tourbillon and movement
that used 3D printing technology using the technique of Direct Metal
Laser Sintering in the manufacturing process. The result of this is a
lightweight and innovative manual winding movement that includes a
30-second rotating tourbillon, a power reserve display and a second
time zone indication. In addition, the watch is fully skeletonised, thus
adding to the visual impact of the fast-moving tourbillon. The present
lot comes in excellent condition and includes the full suite of
accessories. For any \"Paneristis\" or those who can value one of the
most innovative approaches to developing a tourbillon, this is the ideal
timepiece.

Patek Philippe is widely considered by most collectors as representing the pinnacle of high horology. Over its 184-year history the
Maison has been responsible for some of the most iconic watches,
from its legendary first serially produced perpetual calendar, reference
1526, to the iconic Nautilus reference 3700. This very first Nautilus
and many more are featured in the rare and extraordinary grouping of
watches from a sophisticated Asian private collector.
Yet beyond the watches, the story of the collector is a fascinating
one. Born in Hong Kong, he did not come from a wealthy background, and the collector is a prime example of the industrious
self-made man at a time when Hong Kong’s fortunes were growing
through industry and development. But the collector always had
a passion for watches, and viewed them not as accessories to be
used, but as works of art to be appreciated. Rare would be the times
that his watches would be worn, and he much preferred viewing and
admiring them for their designs and beauty. The watches were occasionally wound to preserve the movements functionality, and all the
accessories were shown the same meticulous level of care attention.
The result: a highly unique and rare collection of watches with sharp
edges and crisp hallmarks that for their age are in excellent condition.
From well-known classics like the Nautilus reference 3700 (Lot
844) to more daring timepieces like Patek Philippe’s first self-winding skeletonised wristwatch reference 3878 (Lot 843) to possibly
unique timepieces like an Ellipse yellow gold pocket watch reference
874/3 (Lot 842) it’s an amazing array of timepieces the collector
acquired and took so much care of over decades.
Bonhams proud to showcase this amazing collection of neo-vintage Patek Philippe timepieces, that not only have been carefully
preserved with full certificates and boxes by the original owner, but
whose rarity and designs celebrate one of the golden eras of Patek
Philippe watchmaking. For collectors who are truly passionate about
the brand, and enthusiasts who want to delve deeper into the history,
each of the following 8 lots has something to offer.

Reference 3578 was released in 1969 and included the very slim 8\"
calibre 175 until it was replaced with the calibre 177 in 1977. The
sides are flanked by two inlaid lapis lazuli stripes that enhance the
two-piece \"skater\" shaped case. The timepiece features an 18k
white gold mesh bracelet that is stamped JPE, which indicates it was
produced by Jean-Pierre Ecoffey. Jean-Pierre Ecoffey is renowned
for producing some of the highest quality bracelets, as well as
jewelry pieces for Patek Philippe during mid to late 20th century. The
bracelet is in excellent condition and shows no signs of warping. It is
a great example of ultra-thin Patek Philippe dress watches that were
so popular during this era.

One of the most exciting watches in this vintage Patek Philippe
collection might possibly be reference 3445 “Monodate”, launched
in 1961 as the first simple calendar wristwatch produced by the
maison. The current example is a 2nd series, produced in the mid to
late 1970s, with a blue dial, of which 2800 were made yet only 190
have been identified. The timepiece also includes a maker’s 18k white
gold mesh bracelet stamped JPE after Jean-Pierre Ecoffey in Geneva.
While the silvered dials were the most common, the gilt, blue and
black examples are far rarer. In addition to this, given the meticulous
care the collector has shown to his watches, the mesh style bracelet
is in excellent condition and shows no signs of warping or serious
use. It is rare for such a fine example in this configuration of dial and
material to appear at auction, thus this is a truly incredible opportunity
for the discerning collector to pick up this iconic reference.
